Strong teams begin with Belbin
Belbin Team Roles are used to identify behavioural strengths and weaknesses in the workplace. Whether developing people, resolving conflict or fine-tuning high performance, Belbin Team Roles provide the language to ensure that individuals and teams communicate and work together with greater understanding.
Meredith Belbin and his team of researchers found there are infinite behaviours in the workplace, but there are only a finite amount of useful behaviours that are critical to the success of the team. They identified nine separate clusters of behaviour that facilitated this success - each of these clusters is called a Belbin Team Role.
To find out an individual’s Belbin Team Role strengths and weaknesses, they need to complete the Belbin Self-Perception Inventory (online) and ideally ask for feedback from those they work with. This generates a Belbin Individual Report which offers in-depth, personalised advice and guidance.
This is the starting point.
Once everyone has a common language to talk about their strengths and weaknesses, the team can start communicating and and using this information to ensure that the right person is being allocated the right task at the right time.
Areas of development can be uncovered, and the needs of the team discussed. The team can help to support each other to ensure the best possible contributions are made.
